Bungoma County Assembly begins to vet CEC members

The County Assembly of Bungoma kick-started the vetting of County Executive Members on Friday, with Education CEC nominee David Wanyonyi Mamili the first to appear before the House Committee.

The House Appointments Committee headed by Speaker Emmanuel Situma, put Wanyoyi to task to explain how he will deal with the bloated scholarship scheme beneficiaries and how its funding will be carried out.

In his response, Wanyonyi stated that he will seek guidance from key education stakeholders before implementing any project. Adding that the Bungoma Education empowerment scheme was a noble idea and should be supported to benefit the majority of bright but needy students.

“Chairman sir, scholarship is one of the ideas many people are dreaming of, we will support it so that it caters to all needy cases, and with it we will be able to produce excellent students who would otherwise be left to rot at home,” he said.

When it was turn for Herbert Kibunguchy the CEC nominee for Environment, Water and Natural Resources docket, told the assembly vetting committee that he is up to the task and ready for work.

Kibunguchy headed the Roads and Public Works during Governor Ken Lusaka’s first tenure in office and stated that he will handle water issues well once approved.

“NZOWASCO the key water supplier in Bungoma County should first benefit Mt. Elgon residents because it is the source, the majority of them lack water despite NZOWASCO getting water from the region,” said Kibunguchy.

On the environment, he noted that he will make sure garbage collection is done regularly and the environment is well maintained to stop the spread of diseases.

Trade CEC nominee Caroline Khalayi Makali stated that she will ensure that all towns and market centres are fitted with flood masts and street lights to encourage a 24-hour economy.

“Flood masts and street lights will reduce insecurity in market centres and ensure that business people have enough time to carry on with their businesses,” she said.

Roads CEC nominee Bonaventure Chengek Chemaket explained how he will transform the road network in the county once approved for the same post.

Kabuchai MCA Barasa Mukhongo asked about the measures he will put in place to enhance revenue collection, however, the nominee stated that he needs the roads status report to analyse and find a solution.

“We will work very closely with the traffic department and other different transport stakeholders and collectively with the national government to solve the impasse,” he said.

He noted that they will work on the mechanisms of working together with the Sacco officials in reaching out for a possible solution.

“I will engage KENHA to ensure we complete the dual carriageway project, this is the project that is very crucial in the expansion and beautification of Bungoma town,” he added.

Chengek noted that they will need to have an inventory of all county roads so that it can help them prioritize roads that need quick intervention.

Health docket CEC nominee Dr. Andrew Wekesa pledged to fight cartels in the health ministry who are supplying air and leaving patients at the mercy of God.

“I will also try to fix our health centres by equipping them with medicine and ensure its availability to all patients, those found contravening my orders will face the music,” he said.

The vetting of other four CEC nominees will be vetted on Monday, November 7, bringing the total number to nine.
