Kenyan troops set to depart for DRC

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are set to deploy in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the East Africa Community Regional Force tasked with combating rebels that have for years caused untold suffering.

President William Ruto on Wednesday handed the Kenyan contingent headed by Colonel Daniel Rotich the national flag at the Embakasi Garrison, Nairobi, effectively flagging off the the troops. He took time to pray for the troops to be deployed asking God to grant them favour.

He emphasized the need for peace and tranquility in the region to aid business and commerce saying without peace all potential is differed in perpetuity. “At the bare minimum every society deserves the opportunity to experience peace and safety and every nation desires to guarantee its people the dividends of security and stability,” he added.

The KDF will be the second to deploy after a Burundian contingent that deployed on August 15.

The Kenyan contingent is expected to spearhead the fight against insecurity in North and South Kivu, and Ituri provinces. The troops will enter the DRC by tackling a hot zone near the Ugandan border in Bunagana. The area has been under M23 rebel control since June 14, when the group resumed fighting after a long hiatus.

According to the Chief of Defence Forces, General Robert Kibochi, the mandate of the regional force is to support DRC in humanitarian jobs in areas manifested by armed groups, maintain law and order, and aid in the disarmament of rebel groups.

Public universities seek financial support from World Bank

Public Universities through the Universities Fund (UF) are seeking a KES 2.4 billion World Bank bailout to alleviate an acute cash crisis that is threatening to ground their operations.

While confirming submitting the request for a grant, the agency said the request is part of its resource mobilisation efforts to enable the universities to secure alternative resources to supplement government funding.

“We have made a KES 2.4 billion grant request to the World Bank as part of our alternative resource mobilisation activities,” said UF chief executive officer Geoffrey Monari.

The institutions of higher learning are struggling to honour obligations such as payroll taxes, retirement benefits, and insurance premiums for employees amid funding shortfall amid rising number of government-sponsored students.

Among the outstanding remittances is a PAYE bill of KES 13.7 billion, pension bill of KES 18.5 billion, cooperative or sacco contributions of KES 4.1 billion and KES 4.5 billon owed to part-time lecturers.

Court freezes assets of Treasury employee suspected of graft

A Treasury official is in new trouble after the corruption watchdog received orders to freeze three properties. The official was discovered to have a KES 8.7 million M-Pesa balance and was being investigated in a KES 177 million fraud case from the government through facilitation allowances.

Justice Esther Maina issued the order freezing Faith Jematia Kiptis’ two parcels of land in Mombasa and Kilifi and an apartment in Nairobi following an application by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

“She is prohibited from dealing, selling or disposing any of the listed properties for a period of six months to enable the commission complete investigations into the alleged corruption,” ruled Maina. EACC, in the suit filed through lawyer Joram Wambugu, alleged that Kiptis who is a principal finance and budget officer at the National Treasury, conspired with other employees to steal KES 177 million through fictitious payments and used some of the cash to purchase the properties.

The case will be menitioned again in June 13, 2023.

Ethiopia warring parties agree to a truce

The warring sides in Ethiopia’s devastating conflict have agreed on a truce, the African Union’s mediator announced on Wednesday following marathon talks in South Africa.

The surprise deal was unveiled almost two years to the day since the start of a war that has claimed many thousands of lives and unleashed a desperate humanitarian crisis.

“Today is the beginning of a new dawn for Ethiopia, for the Horn of Africa and indeed for Africa as a whole,” the AU’s broker, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, declared.

“The two parties in the Ethiopian conflict have formally agreed to the cessation of hostilities as well as the systematic, orderly, smooth and coordinated disarmament,” Obasanjo said at a briefing in Pretoria.

They also agreed on “restoration of law and order, restoration of services, unhindered access to humanitarian supplies, protection of civilians… among other areas of agreement.”

But, cautioned, “this moment is not the end of the peace process but the beginning of it. Implementation of the peace agreements signed today is critical.”

AC Milan match into UCL round of 16

Olivier Giroud scored twice and created another goal as AC Milan beat Red Bull Salzburg at the San Siro to progress to the Champions League knockout stage for the first time in eight years.

The Italians needed to avoid defeat in their final Group E game to reach the last 16, while Salzburg needed to win.

Giroud headed in an early opener before assisting Rade Krunic to score.

Veteran striker Giroud drilled in his second and Junio Messias wrapped it up with a solo goal in stoppage time.

The win meant Milan secured second spot in Group E behind Chelsea. Austria’s Salzburg go into the Europa League after finishing third.

At 36 years and 33 days, Frenchman Giroud became the oldest player to score a double in the Champions League for Milan since Filippo Inzaghi against Real Madrid in November 2010.

India edge closer to T-20 semi with nervy win over Bangladesh

India moved one step closer to the T20 World Cup semifinals on Wednesday at the Adelaide Oval after edging Bangladesh by five runs in a nail-biting Group 2 match.

KL Rahul (50), who had been without a run for a while, finally got one as Virat Kohli (64), who continued his excellent form, led India to a commanding 184 for 6. After a rain delay, Bangladesh had to chase a revised target of 151 runs in 16 overs. With Litton Das going on the attack and scoring 60 runs, Bangladesh appeared to be on track, but they ultimately finished on 145 for 6.

With six points, India moved into first place in Group 2, one point ahead of South Africa, who have played one fewer game.
