Today, Wednesday, October 19, marks day three of the cabinet secretary nominees vetting and 32 days to the World Cup.

Here is what you need to know.

Day three of the vetting of cabinet nominees

Today is the day for Zachariah Njeru, picked to head Lands, Housing and Physical Planning, Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen, two-term Elgeyo Marakwet senator, as CS for Roads, Transport and Public Works, Susan Nakhumicha Wafula nominee for the CS Ministry of Health, Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage CS nominee Peninah Malonza, and Environment and Forestry CS nominee Roselinda Soipan Tuya.

They will be facing the National Assembly Committee of Appointments chaired by Speaker Moses Wetangula.

DCI asks to withdraw KES 7.3B corruption case against DP Gachagua

A senior Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer’s affidavit may have been the final piece in Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and nine other people’s KES 7.3 billion corruption case.

The chief investigator in the case, Kuria Obadiah, has asked that the case against Gachagua be dropped in the most recent of a series of withdrawal petitions that have come from DCI and been approved by the Office of Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

Obadiah claims that they rushed the investigation into the Gachagua case. “The investigation team I headed was given strict and fixed timelines to come up with findings promptly which made it difficult to conduct thorough investigations into the allegations,” Obadiah says in the affidavit sworn on October 15, 2022.

Additionally, it was revealed yesterday that Martin Otieno, a different DCI officer, has retracted the majority of the evidence presented in support of a constitutional claim that was a major point of contention between previous DCI chief George Kinoti and Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji.

Obadiah requested to have the matter withdrawn under Section 87 (a) of the Criminal Procedure Code. The section allows the prosecutor to withdraw a matter with the consent of the court, at any time before a judgment is pronounced.

It is a rich cabinet

As the process of screening candidate Cabinet secretaries reached its second day yesterday, it continued to expose the billionaire “hustlers” vying to run the government, leaving many talking online over the wealthy cabinet.

The combined net worth of the 10 nominees who have so far come before the Committee on Appointments is KES 8 billion.

Prof. Kindiki Kithure (Interior and National administration) is worth KES 544 million, while Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u (National Treasury and Planning) disclosed that he is worth KES 950 million. Davis Chirchir (Energy and Petroleum), Aisha Jumwa (Public Service Gender and Affirmative Action), and Moses Kuria (Trade Investment and Industry) all have estimated net worths of KES 100 million, KES 482.2 million, and KES 750 million, respectively.

Ndungu was put on task to explain multiple graft charges against him while Jumwa was challenged by Suna East MP Junet Mohammed on how she acquired the wealth. “On the net wealth, we need to know details of that breakdown. Maybe you have forgotten the figure may be higher than that,” he said.

Ruto forwards IG nominee Japhet Koome’s name to parliament

Koome is the current Commandant of the National Police Service College, Kiganjo, and a former Nairobi County Police Commander.

His nomination came after departing Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, who is fighting illness, chose to go on terminal leave before the end of his term.

The vetting of Koome will be conducted by a joint committee of Parliament, Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations, and the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs.

The joint committee will have 28 days from when it first meets to consider Koome’s suitability and subsequently submit a joint report to the respective Houses for debate.

Kenyans have 30 days to provide views on education reform

Kenyans have one month to submit their ideas for improvements to the educational system after the team constituted last month began public outreach.

Parents, teachers, administrators, students, religious leaders, and other interested parties will submit their perspectives on education reforms in primary, secondary, and higher education within the next month.

Yesterday, contributions were requested via a press announcement from Prof. Raphael Munavu, chair of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

The team is open to views from individuals, public and private institutions and any other interested parties. The team is also expected to tour the country to collect views from the public.

The views should be submitted by way of written memoranda, letters or research papers. They should be addressed to the chairperson of the reforms team and hand-delivered to their office on the 10th Floor of Absa Towers, Loita Street, Nairobi, or by email or post.

Two Kenyan athletes suspended for doping

Doping continues to plague Athletics Kenya, as two more Kenyan long-distance athletes were suspended for doping on Tuesday.

Athletes Integrity Unit (AIU), the body formed by World Athletics to combat doping in the sport, Tuesday provisionally suspended Ibrahim Mukunga Wachira and Kenneth Kiprop Renju for the use of banned substances.

Mukunga, who won a half marathon race in Estonia in socks in 2017, has been suspended for the use of prohibited Norandrosterone, while the national 10,000m champion Renju got nabbed for the use of Methasterone.

Renju is the most successful of the duo, besides winning the national title on April 27 this year, he also won Lille 10km race on March 27 in France, Prague Half Marathon on April 2 in the Czech Republic and Lisbon Half Marathon on May 22 in Portugal.

He started the season with a third place finish at Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon on February 19 in the United Arab Emirates.

Kante to miss World Cup

N’Golo Kante, a midfielder for France and Chelsea, will not compete in the World Cup in Qatar due to a hamstring injury.

Kante, 31, was hurt on August 14 during Chelsea’s 2-2 home draw with Tottenham.

The treatment was successful, the club said in a statement, but Kante is anticipated to miss four months of action.

It further stated that the decision to do the necessary repairs was “mutual.”

The midfielder saw a specialist with the team’s medical staff to investigate his rehabilitation options, according to the statement.

Prior to last weekend’s game against Aston Villa, Blues manager Graham Potter stated that Kante had had a setback in his quest to get healthy again.

Kante, who won the 2018 World Cup with France, is the latest Premier League player to sustain a catastrophic injury in the run-up to the championship event, which begins in November.
