Off the hook? Jumwa turned to state witness in 2019 murder case
Former Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa could be off the hook by being turned into a state witness in a murder case she has been facing before the Mombasa court.
This is after High Court in Mombasa was informed that Jumwa and the family of Jola Ngumbao, who she is accused of murdering, is negotiating to have the matter settled out of court.
The Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative Action cabinet secretary nominee through her defense lawyers is lobbying the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to drop charges against her.
Her lawyers pleaded with the court to review her file and have her placed to testify of behalf of the state.
State Prosecutor Vivian Kambaga said the deceased family feels that Jumwa was not armed at the time of the incident, did not shoot their kin, and, therefore, was not a principal offender.
Jumwa and her assistant Geoffrey Okuto Otieno are charged with murder and assault in connection with a man’s death and the injury of several others during the 2019 Ganda Ward by-election.
The man was shot dead at Ganda Ward in Malindi, Kilifi County, on October 15, during a scuffle between opposing ODM party supporters.
Both Jumwa and Okuto have denied committing the murder.
This comes barely a week after the DPP dropped corruption charges against her involving KES 19m in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
She has appeared before the National Assembly’s committee on appointments chaired by the speaker of the house Moses Wetangula. If approved, Jumwa will join a cluster of coastal leaders appointed to serve in cabinet under President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
