Kenya to host Africa Golf Federation
Kenya has been chosen to host the headquarters of Africa Golf Confederation because of the progress the country has made in developing the game.
Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) President Johnson Omollo from Uganda yesterday said that besides southern Africa region, Kenya has grown its golf, and Kenyan corporates have not only provided tremendous support to the Kenyan game, but also to countries in East Africa.
“The fact that Kenya hosts major events annually, chiefly the Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship which is a DP World Tour event, makes it the most unique country to host the headquarters of the AGC,’’ Omollo said on Friday in Nairobi. He said the AGC had been initially based in Mauritius, but it was never registered in the Indian Ocean island nation.
“We managed to register AGC in Kenya as an organization in September 2023, but we are still looking for funds to operationalise the office,” Omollo said.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwean city of Bulawayo will host this year’s All Africa Team Golf Championship from October 30 to November 2.
The tournament, which is Africa’s premier amateur golf championship and is organized under the auspices of the AGC, is a biennial event that is hosted by different African countries on a rotational basis.
It comes hot on the heels of the 2024 All Africa Junior Team Golf Championship for players aged 18 years and under, which was staged at Benoni Country Club in Johannesburg from April 21 to 27. In a statement, Zimbabwe Golf Administrator T. Nheweyembwa, yesterday said teams are expected to arrive in Bulawayo on October 28 for an official practice round and the opening ceremony.
The opening round of the championship will be held from October 30 to November 2.
