Shock as body of unknown woman found in Kibra, washed downstream by heavy rains

Highrise Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samuel Nganai says police have found the body of an unknown woman believed to have died due to heavy flooding following Saturday night’s heavy downpour.

The woman’s lifeless body is believed to have been swept downstream via Ngong River to Kibra on Sunday Night.

The police also believe that the deceased woman was with a child at the time of her demise and are searching for the body.

Speaking to Nation in an interview on Sunday, Mr Nganai confirmed the incident.

“We received a call from a community leader in Kibra after residents woke up to the body of an unknown dead woman this morning.

We are however in communication with our colleagues from Lang’ata Police Station to pick up the body as we have established that the incident occurred in their jurisdiction, at the border of Kibra and Lang’ata,” he said adding that they are combining efforts to find the body of the dead child.

“Our colleagues are on their way to collect the body as we speak.

“The procedure is after we collect it we will run the deceased’s fingerprints through the system with the hope of identifying her,” Mr Nganai said.

Raphael Oluoch, the community leader in Kibra who alerted the police told Nation that they were already sharing photos of the woman’s lifeless body on WhatsApp platforms with the hope that someone would identify her.

“I was standing by Ngong River which meanders through Kibra catching up with a friend at around 9 AM when the dead body showed up.

This is someone’s mother, sister, friend or wife,” he said highlighting that the corpse from upstream and was swept to Kibra due to the heavy rains on Sunday night.

“The body has a visibly swollen forehead and a bloodstained face.

Some residents speculate that they may have seen her in Katwekera with a child but do not know for sure.”

Government chief pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor however told the Nation that even though it is very possible to identify her, it is very difficult at the same time due to systemic challenges.

“The police are going to take the body of that Jane Doe to the mortuary where fingerprints will first of all be lifted and taken to the registrar to try and trace the woman’s name, location and if they find, they will contact the chief with a hope of getting to her relatives.”

He highlights that though it sounds simple in many instances this approach hits a dead-end.

“We behave many unidentified bodies in this country despite them having finger-prints because first, some Kenyans don’t come to collect the bodies of their loved ones.

What I have also observed is that despite our finger print collection system being robust, some police officers are also lazy, don’t take their work seriously when it comes to following that approach.”

According to Dr Oduor this is why the government has been training morticians around the country to lift fingerprints.

He further points out that many Kenyans from low economic household settings do not apply for and take ID cards making identification of dead unknown bodies much more difficult as their records don’t exist.
